Description

It can be a challenge to keep up with the latest innovations in hospital ventilation systems and techniques, and the many ways they are changing the management of patients with respiratory failure. 50%+ of ICU patients are intubated within 24 hours of admission 310 per 100,000 U.S. adults undergo invasive ventilation for nonsurgical indications 40% of the total duration of mechanical ventilation is the weaning process 4 And recently, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen delivery has gained popularity as part of a strategy for supportive therapy in many clinical situations, including weaning. Community-acquired pneumonia: Early studies assessing the effect of NIV to treat communityacquired pneumonia (CAP) are conflicting and of low quality. More recent studies have demonstrated high failure rates of NIV, and NIV failure was associated with higher mortality. Another study found in an adjusted analysis that NIV failure patients had worse outcomes than patients invasively ventilated as first-line therapy.8 The close monitoring of these patients is key to successful treatment. Delaying intubation was also associated with higher mortality.
