In this coaxial limb system, the exhaled gases thermally insulate the oncoming inspiratory gases and this creates an efficient thermo micro-climate within the circuit, meaning the gas provides the optimum support for the patient. A patient-end bacterial viral filter-HME is advised when CombiFlex® is used in a critical care setting. A suitable HME will provide inhaled gases typically at >31mg, H2O/L gas at 500ml Tv and 15RR.
