PresentationThe tail-flick test applies a radiant heat stimulus to the tail; when the animal performs a sudden tail movement (tail flick) the stimulus and the timer stop automatically. The measured latency (time from stimulus onset to response) is used to evaluate analgesic properties, basal thermal nociception, or genetic differences in naïve animals.
Operating principleThe LE7106 Tail-flick Meter comprises a Stimulation Unit (containing a halogen lamp for the heat stimulus) and an electronic Control Unit. Animals are positioned with the tail protruding through a restraining tube on the Stimulation Unit platform. The tail is placed in an adjustable-width slot with a groove that ensures correct positioning. A remote foot-switch starts and stops the test. An adjustable photo beam detects the tail flick and the latency is displayed on the Control Unit with 0.01 s precision. A user-settable cut-off time prevents tissue damage (default: 20 s). Precise control of the heat stimulus and the groove placement ensure good repeatability and reliability of results.
SoftwareOptional SeDacom software (version 2.0 available) can be used to visualize and export data to a computer for further analysis.
