Description

Overview
Decay tanks supplied by H2O EQUIPEMENT are engineered for the secure handling of hospital radioactive effluents from nuclear medicine departments and laboratories. Designed to comply with applicable regulations, they provide temporary storage and confinement until radioactivity decays below regulatory thresholds, protecting patients, staff and the environment.

Main features
  • Volume range: 500 L to 6000 L
  • Multi-tank operation possible (recommended minimum two tanks for alternating use)
  • Isolation and sampling points for radiological checks
  • Fully custom-built tanks to fit available space, doors and corridors
  • Complete alarm package with BMS/BAS and supervision connectivity
  • Remote display with measurement capability and data access

Decay tank effluent treatment — Context and principle
Radioactive liquid effluents primarily originate from medical and research activities (nuclear medicine, brachytherapy, radionuclide injections, so-called hot sinks). These discharges contain isotopes with varying half-lives. Prior to any discharge to the sewer system, effluents are stored in decay tanks until their activity decreases to regulatory limits. In France, the decree of 23 July 2008 defines technical rules for the management of these effluents.

Principle of a decay tank station
  • Storage tanks: typically at least two tanks to allow alternating filling and decay phases
  • Capacity sizing: based on generated volumes, emission frequency and isotope characteristics
  • Dedicated technical room: sealed, secured, clearly marked and access-controlled
  • Advanced safety: level probes, visual and audible alarms, retention basin for leaks, centralized supervision potentially linked to BMS/BAS
  • Radioactivity control: sampling and/or continuous monitoring before any release to the public network
  • Differentiated management: separation of short-lived effluents to optimize storage time

Design & services
H2O EQUIPEMENT supports projects from design to commissioning: site analysis to identify the technical room and required volumes, tailored tank dimensions (diameter and height), integrated instrumentation and centralized alarm reporting to supervision systems. Maintenance contracts and training for operational staff can be provided.

Technical specifications
  • Manufacturer: H2O EQUIPEMENT
  • Volume range: 500 L – 6000 L
  • Multi-tank operation: yes (possibility to switch between tanks; at least two tanks recommended)
  • Customization: tanks manufactured to fit site constraints, doors and corridors
  • Safety: level probes, visual and audible alarms, retention basin
  • Supervision: centralized alarm system with BMS/BAS connectivity
  • Monitoring: sampling and/or continuous radioactivity monitoring prior to release
  • Remote display: available with measurement capabilities
  • Design support: guidance from design phase to identify technical room and required volume
