Product overviewThe SaberVet African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) Antibody Rapid Test is an immunochromatographic lateral flow assay for qualitative detection of ASFV-specific antibodies in serum or plasma. Designed for field and laboratory screening, the kit supports rapid herd-level surveillance and on-site decision making in swine production systems.
Clinical signs and disease forms- Acute form: high fever (40–42°C), haemorrhagic lesions (skin petechiae on ears, abdomen, limb tips), anorexia, respiratory distress, vomiting and diarrhoea (possible haemorrhagic), and very high mortality (up to 90–100%) within 7–10 days.
- Subacute form: moderate fever, reduced appetite, mild respiratory signs and haemorrhagic symptoms; mortality typically 30–70%.
- Chronic form: intermittent fever, growth retardation, wasting, skin ulceration/necrosis, arthritis or lameness; mortality lower but significant production losses.
Routes of transmission- Direct contact between pigs via blood, saliva, urine or feces; wild/feral pigs can act as reservoirs.
- Indirect transmission through contaminated feed, water, vehicles, equipment and personnel acting as fomites.
- Soft tick vectors (Ornithodoros spp.) in endemic areas may transmit the virus by bite.
- Inadequately processed pork products can spread infection.
Clinical diagnosis and laboratory testing- Clinical suspicion arises from high fever, haemorrhagic signs and rapid mortality; field tests aid early screening.
- Confirmatory laboratory methods: PCR for viral DNA, virus isolation, ELISA and antibody detection for serological status, and immunofluorescence for antigen detection in tissues.
Prevention and control measures- Implement strict on-farm biosecurity: isolate new stock, disinfect personnel and equipment, restrict farm access.
- Active surveillance and rapid reporting of suspected cases; quarantine affected units.
- Avoid contact with wild pigs and control soft tick vectors where present.
- Control actions: humane culling of infected herds, safe carcass disposal, thorough cleaning and disinfection, and zoning of affected areas.
- Vaccine status: no licensed effective commercial vaccine currently available; several candidates in research.
