Product overviewEmpyrean XAS integrates X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) into the Empyrean multipurpose X-ray platform, enabling laboratory-based XANES and EXAFS measurements alongside XRD, X-ray scattering and imaging techniques. One platform supports multiple structural perspectives and consistent experimental workflows.
Key capabilities- Determine long-range crystal structure using diffraction
- Investigate nanoscale organization using scattering techniques
- Capture structural imaging data
- Probe local chemical environments using XAS (XANES and EXAFS)
What XAS reveals- Identification of oxidation states
- Determination of coordination geometry
- Measurement of interatomic distances
- Investigation of short-range order
Measurement approach and performanceEmpyrean XAS performs measurements in a dedicated transmission configuration for stable, reproducible energy scanning and quantitative interpretation. High energy resolution supports detailed XANES analysis (including pre-edge features) and a wide k-range for quantitative EXAFS analysis.
Elemental and energy coverage- Accessible energy range: 4–20+ keV
- Supports K-edges of mid-Z elements (e.g. Ti, Fe, Ni, Mo)
- Supports L-edges of heavier elements (e.g. Ba, Ce)
- Multi-edge capability: measure multiple absorption edges sequentially within a single experiment
Workflow and software features- Automated data acquisition
- Scan alignment and normalization
- Detector correction and background subtraction
- Pre-edge and post-edge fitting
- Spectral processing and data curation
Applications- Energy storage — study oxidation-state changes and local structural evolution during battery charge/discharge; track redox processes and monitor electrode material changes
- Catalysis — investigate active sites, oxidation states and reaction pathways in heterogeneous catalysts; understand structure–performance relationships
- Advanced materials — characterize short-range order, defects and electronic structure; investigate nanoscale effects on mechanical, electronic or optical properties
- Environmental & geological science — analyze trace elements and chemical transformations; study speciation and transformation processes in complex environmental materials
