Description

Overview
Nordson MEDICAL supplies high-precision, specialized extruded tubing for medical devices, offering single-lumen, multi-lumen, multi-layer and co-extruded constructions. FDA-registered production sites, ISO 13485 certified facilities, and Class 8 qualified production cleanrooms support rapid turnaround and scalable production capacity.

Key Features & Capabilities
  • Single-lumen extruded tubing including ultrathin-wall and microthin-wall constructions
  • Multi-lumen extruded tubing: 2–9 lumens, shaped lumens, round or non-round cross-sections (oval, figure-eight)
  • Multi-layer extrusion: up to three discrete layers to combine functionality (e.g., lubricity, bondability, active layers such as hydrophilic or drug-eluting)
  • Co-extruded/stripe extrusions for radiopaque stripes and multi-material jackets
  • Tapered and bump tubing for OD/ID transitions and localized OD increases
  • Profile extrusion for complex shapes and geometries

Materials
  • Full range of thermoplastics
  • Fluoropolymers / melt fluoropolymers: FEP, PFA, PCTFE, ETFE, PVDF, ECTFE, EFEP, PTFE
  • Fluoroplastics (FEP, PTFE) and etched/treated fluoropolymer options
  • Engineering plastics: PEEK, Polysulfone
  • Nylon (Nylon 11, Nylon 12)
  • Pebax grades (multiple durometers including Pebax 2533SA01MED, 3533SA01MED, 4033SA01MED, 5533SA01MED, 633SA01MED, 7033SA01MED, 7233SA01MED)
  • Polyurethane, PET, HDPE, LDPE, TPE, polycarbonate, and many custom-compounded materials (colorants, stabilizers, radiopaque fillers, active agents)

Lubricious Materials & Additives
Used as liners or alternatives to hydrophilic coatings to improve insertion, pushability, and bondability. Market-leading lubricious additives referenced include: EverGlide®, PEBASlide, ProPell S™, Mobilize.

Secondary Processes
  • Tipping:
Radius or chamfer formation at tube ends; closed, tapered, radiopaque, or soft tips; radiused and atraumatic tip options
  • Printing:
Text, numeric identifiers, depth marks, multiple colors and surface treatments; conventional medical-grade printing processes supported
  • Hole Forming:
Precision holes and skive patterns for balloon inflation, irrigation, with razor-sharp cutting edges and multi-lumen registration
  • Over-molding:
Integration of multiple materials (e.g., Y-connectors, hubs, strain reliefs) to produce combined parts and assemblies
  • Other value-added processes: OD/ID etching (including sodium naphthalene etching for fluoropolymers), flaring, flanging, notching, drilling, welding, radiopaque tip integration

In-house Equipment & Process Controls
  • Best-in-class tolerances and validated processes to support customer compliance
  • Automatic closed-loop feedback systems to maintain constant melt pressure
  • High-speed polyurethane extrusion capacity (cited >300 million feet annually)
  • Cleanroom environment for most commercial extrusions

Fluoropolymer & Material Property Highlights (summary)
Fluoropolymer options support excellent chemical/solvent resistance, low water absorption, high dielectric strength, low coefficients of friction, and a range of melting/upper service temperatures depending on polymer (PTFE, FEP, PFA, ETFE, PVDF, PCTFE, ECTFE, EFEP). Etching (sodium naphthalene process) is used to improve fluoropolymer bondability where required.
