Prolactin (PRL), also called milk secretion hormone, is a hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and is responsible for stimulating primary milk production. It is present at lower levels in normal men and non-pregnant women, and is generally measured higher in women than men. In women, prolactin levels increase during pregnancy and immediately after childbirth, stimulating milk production and helping to maintain breast milk supply. In men, elevated levels of prolactin can lead to milk secretion, which can lead to erectile dysfunction or ejaculation disorder.
