OsCare Sono™ -osteoporosis detection device is based on low-frequency (~200 kHz) ultrasound. Ultrasound and ultrasonic guided waves provide information on the strenght of the bone, which is defined by the a) geometry, b) density and c) stiffness of the bone. OsCare Sono™ is specifically developed for osteoporosis screening.
The measurement is taken on the radius. Often, osteoporosis is detected only when the bone is already fractured. In contrast to the tibia or heel, the developing osteoporosis will be detected earlier on the radius, due to less mechanical stress. The most common areas for an osteoporotic fracture, besides the radius, are the hips and thoracic vertebra.
The OsCare Sono™ -osteoporosis detection devices axial ultrasound velocity correlates with bone mineral density (BMD) and cortical thickness. Based on clinical study data, it calculates the Z-Score and T-Score.
T-Score compares the bone density to the average bone density of a healthy person of the same gender. It is reported as a number of standard deviations below the average. Z-Score compares the bone density to the average bone density in those with the same gender and age as the subject.
