OverviewThe Hand of Hope (HOH) is a portable, wearable robotic hand (hand brace) for neuromuscular rehabilitation of the hand and forearm. It uses surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors to detect the patient's own muscle signals and provides visual biofeedback to support motor relearning and active engagement during therapy.
How it worksThe system is worn on the impaired hand. Two surface sensors are attached to the flexor and extensor muscles of the forearm to record sEMG signals during training. Processed EMG signals are used to trigger a motor in the robotic hand to assist and initiate the intended movement. Assistance is driven by patient-generated EMG and supports movement without forcing it, enabling supervised, patient-initiated activation.
Training and therapyThe device supports rhythmic, task-related training and includes interactive, game-based exercises that increase in complexity to train grasping, hand opening and arm-related tasks. Regular use aims to help re-establish motor pathways and improve performance of daily activities through motivated, active participation.
Application and intended usersIndicated for patients affected by stroke or acquired brain injury to assist motor control, muscle relaxation, coordination and motor relearning. Suitable for patients from approximately 8–9 years old.
