Indocyanine Green (ICG, available as Verdye in many territories) is a tricarbocyanine dye that, when used with NIR camera systems, fluoresces to allow visualization of anatomical structures. ICG/NIR fluorescence imaging is valuable in minimally invasive surgery for intraoperative assessment of visceral perfusion (e.g., enteroanastomosis), visualization of biliary structures in fluorescence cholangiography, and lymph node mapping in oncological procedures (e.g., sentinel lymph node visualization in lymphadenectomy).

How Fluorescence Works
Upon administration, ICG binds to plasma proteins and circulates throughout the vascular system. Its absorption spectrum is in the near-infrared range (600 nm to 900 nm), emitting fluorescence between 800 nm and 850 nm. Visualization requires an ICG/NIR camera system, such as System green, enabling intraoperative detection and visualization of fluorescence for clearer anatomical structure identification.

• Indocyanine Green (ICG, also known as Verdye, Diagnostic Green) is a tricarbocyanine dye with hydrophilic and lipophilic properties
• Intended for intravenous injection; rapidly binds to plasma proteins (mainly beta-apolipoprotein B)
• Cleared exclusively through the liver and eliminated via bile, with no metabolism
• Key features: Well tolerated, excellent safety profile, half-life of 3-4 minutes, rapid plasma protein binding, no significant extrahepatic or enterohepatic circulation
• Very rare side effects: nausea and anaphylactic reactions (<1/10,000)
