It will plummet after the fetus’s born to a normal standard within a few months to a year. Its content is extremely low in normal human body, less than 20ng/ml. However, when liver cells set to cancerate, they restore the function of producing AFP which will rise sharply in serum as the disease worsens. Clinic Significance 1. High AFP serum levels were found in approximately 60-70 % of patients with primary liver cancer. Currently the blood AFP concentration is considered as the most specific and sensitive cancer marker for early screening and diagnosis on liver cancer in clinic. 2. Pregnant women or those carrying germ cell tumors ( Cancer of the testes and ovaries), active hepatitis, liver cirhosis and metastatic hepatic carcinoma, may have high levels of AFP. 3. AFP blood test can also be used for monitoring the therapy for hepatic cell cancer (Hcc) as well as early detection of post-operative liver cancer recurrence and metastasis.
