Use and purposeForearm crutches are mobility aids used when a patient requires partial unloading of a lower limb, an increased base of support and safer ambulation.
Recommendations for useUnless otherwise prescribed, when only one forearm crutch is used it should be carried on the side opposite the injury to achieve better unloading of the affected limb. To obtain a safer gait the patient should have adequate muscle strength and trunk balance.
How to adjust the heightAdjust the height so the forearm cuff does not block the elbow joint. Position the cuff on the posteroproximal part of the forearm approximately 5 cm from the elbow joint.
Warnings and maintenanceThere are various types of forearm crutches: one-piece, with folding elbow rest, anatomical handle, etc. Check the condition of the ferrule regularly, because once the rubber begins to wear the risk of slipping increases and the crutch loses grip and stability.
