Forearm crutches are used when a patient requires partial unloading of one lower limb, a wider base of support and more secure gait. When only one forearm crutch is used, it is normally carried on the side opposite the injured limb to allow effective off-loading.
For safer ambulation the patient should have adequate trunk balance and sufficient muscle strength.

Height adjustment must be set so the forearm cuff does not block the elbow joint; position the cuff on the proximal-posterior part of the forearm approximately 5 cm from the elbow.
Various forearm crutch designs exist (integral, folding cuff, anatomical handle). Regularly inspect the rubber tip, since wear reduces grip and increases fall risk.
