Product Details - Smallest compass magnetic archival tag on the market: This miniature compass archival tag measures and records earth’s magnetic field strength and tilt in three directions, giving the compass measurements. Additionally, it measures depth (pressure) and temperature. The logger is only 46 mm in length and 15 mm in width.
- Application: DST magnetic is designed as a fish archival tag for geolocation studies, longitude latitude estimates, and migration route tracking of fish and marine animals. It enables scientists to gain valuable information on migration routes and behavioural patterns over a long period of time. The tag can be implanted or tagged externally.
- Wide selection of depth ranges: Customers choose between depth calibration up to: 50 m, 100 m, 270 m, 800 m, 1500 m, or 3000 m. The shallower the range, the better the resolution and accuracy.
- Tag holder kit: A tag holder kit is available for the tags, to make the tagging process easier and increase safety for the fish.
- User defined text on the housing: For tag and release of animals into the wild, the tags can have customized text on the housing for recapture purposes, especially important for commercially fished species.

Using the logger - Simple in Use, From Setup to Data Retrieval: The compass logger and the accompanying items are designed for ease of use throughout the research process, from setting up the logger, attaching it, to retrieving and analysing the data. The logger is supported by the SeaStar software and a Communication Box which have to be purchased with the first order.
- Programming the Logger: To launch the logger for measuring, it is placed into the Communication Box interface that connects with a USB cable to a PC computer. In the SeaStar software, the user sets the start time, start date, and sampling interval before starting the logger in measurement mode. The logger synchronizes its internal clock with the date & time on the computer being used.
- Primary and Secondary Sensors: With default programming, the logger measures compass, tilt, depth, and temperature simultaneously. Optionally, Compass-Tilt and Temp-Depth can be uncoupled, set as primary and secondary parameter pairs with different sampling frequency. That way, memory partitioning can be customized according to individual preferences.
- Single or multiple intervals: There are two modes for sampling, either at a single interval throughout the period or multiple intervals. When choosing multiple interval programming, it is possible to define up to seven different intervals and number of measurements for each interval.
- Memory and Battery Life Calculations: The software automatically calculates when memory fills up based on certain interval settings, making it easier for the user to decide how to program the logger. Estimation on battery consumption during that time period is also calculated.
- Uploading the Data: After recovering the logger, it is inserted into the communication box and the recorded data is uploaded to the software. The results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form and the data can be exported to other programs. The time series data shows each measurement with its own time stamp.
- Low energy consumption: After data retrieval, the logger can be reused, as long as the batteries inside last. Battery life estimation is always reported upon connection with the logger. Due to the low energy consumption circuitry design, the battery life is long, but actual lifetime depends on usage and sampling interval used.
Accessories - Communication box: Serves as an interface between the DST and a PC computer. Used for connecting to the DST, starting the logger, and retrieving data. DST is inserted into the hole of the box for wireless communications. The box comes with a USB cable for connecting to a PC computer.
- SeaStar software: For Windows, needed to operate the DST. Data is displayed in a graph and table. The time series data file can be opened in other programs. An installation product key is provided when ordering the software, for online downloading.
- Patternfinder analysis software: Graphic data analysis software designed to save the users resources by making data analysis more efficient and easier. Allows periodic statistic analysis of time series data, signal filtering and operations, overlaying and analyzing multiple signals, and event and pattern analysis.
- Fish and Marine Animal Tag Holder Kits for External Tagging:
- Plate holder kit: Consists of wire fasteners, a plastic plate for holding the tag, a plastic plate on the opposite side, and silicon pads for external attachment on fish and other subjects. The plastic plates have smooth edges, specially designed for external attachment on animals. Silicone pads underneath give further comfort to the animal’s skin. Star-Oddi can also provide needles for threading wires through the fish. The plate holder kit is available for the centi and milli sized loggers. Weight of the fastening kit is ca. 15 g. in air. Various thickness of wires is available.
- Capsule holder kit: A plastic capsule that has 2 mm holes on each end, ensuring water flow to the sensors. Comes with a wire harness, plastic plate, and two silicone pads for placing under the capsule to prevent descaling and the plastic plate. Available for all logger sizes: centi, milli, and micro.
- Floating Device for DST: For the data storage tags, can be used both for internal and external tagging of fish and marine animals. For internal tagging, the cylinders can be coated with biocompatible material. They can also be painted with bright colours for more visibility (non biocompatible).
