Description

The Process
The individualised design of the Episealer Talus implant and Epiguide is based on MR or CT imaging. By data processing, a virtual 3D model of the talus is created and the lesion is defined. Subsequently, the Episealer implant and instruments are designed to remove the damaged tissue and to restore the area with a perfectly fitting implant. Using the Epiguide during surgery increases the precision of the surgical procedure for optimal positioning of the implant.

Materials and Coatings
The Episealer is made of cobalt-chrome alloy. The portion of the Episealer that is countersunk in the bone and cartilage is covered with a titanium undercoating and a hydroxyapatite outer coating to ensure a quick and lasting fixation to the bone.

Indication and Design
The Episealer Talus is an individualised resurfacing implant intended for use on either the medial or lateral talus. It is designed to treat patients suffering from pain and reduced mobility due to focal osteochondral lesions in the talus and to restore the damaged joint surface to alleviate pain and enable recovery of joint mobility. The Episealer Talus is available in a diameter of 15 mm.

Surgical Instruments and Kit
The Episealer implant is delivered together with an individualised drill guide (Epiguide) and a set of associated tools needed to ensure the best possible outcome. The Epiguide is designed to attach precisely onto the talus surface around the lesion, providing a stable platform for drilling and enabling precise insertion of the implant at exact angle and depth relative to patient anatomy. The Episealer Talus toolkit consists of 7 pieces (9 pieces including the osteotomy guide used for osteotomy of the medial malleolus). The kit is delivered together with the Episealer prior to surgery, removing the need for local hospital stock.

Precision
The unique combination of Epiguide and associated instruments (Epidrill, Drilling socket and Adjustment socket) allows for 0.2 mm precision depth adjustment, giving full control over the depth of the bone bed during the procedure.
