OverviewThe Mastersizer 3000+ Pro is a laser diffraction particle size analyzer delivering rapid, repeatable particle size distributions for suspensions, emulsions and dry powders. It combines a single optical measurement path covering 0.1–2500 µm with interchangeable wet and dry dispersion options and the Mastersizer Xplorer software.
How it worksThe instrument measures light scattered by particles illuminated by a laser beam. Scattering intensity across multiple angles is captured by an array of detectors and analyzed using Mie and Fraunhofer models to calculate particle size distributions.
Optical benchSingle-path optical layout providing measurements from 0.1 to 2500 µm. Red light source (He‑Ne, 632.8 nm) and a log-spaced detector array cover a wide angular range (0.015–60°). Automatic alignment ensures consistent optical performance.
Sample dispersion units- Multiple wet dispersion accessories (six options) for varied sample volumes and dispersants
- Advanced dry dispersion system (Aero series) for reproducible powder handling
- Automated and manual modules available to suit QC and R&D workflows
Mastersizer softwareMastersizer Xplorer controls acquisition, performs data analysis and generates reports. Features include method development guidance, data quality indicators, SOP Architect and connectivity options (Smart Manager, OmniTrust) for audit and device monitoring.
Key applications- Powder flowability and packing — predict handling and processing behaviour
- Formulation stability — monitor flocculation, coalescence and sedimentation
- Viscosity and rheology correlation — particle size impact on suspensions and slurries
- Dissolution and surface area — relevant to pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and detergents
- Inhalation products — control fines and respirable fractions
- Reaction rates and catalyst optimisation — surface-area dependent processes
- Optical and sensory properties — particle sizing for pigments, coatings and food texture
