The vapor is then transported through pipes or directly sprayed to decontaminate enclosed spaces. During vaporization, hydrogen peroxide generates free hydroxyl radicals that oxidatively damage cellular components such as lipids, proteins, and DNA. Gaseous hydrogen peroxide effectively kills bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms at room temperature. It is suitable for sterilizing air and surfaces under dry, low temperature (room temperature), ambient pressure/vacuum / positive pressure conditions.

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizing agent with powerful antimicrobial properties that have been utilized for over 100 years (Schrodt, 1883). It was registered for disinfecting hard surfaces as early as 1977. In 1989, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, 2004a) approved hydrogen peroxide vapor as a major disinfection method. Experiments have demonstrated that vaporized hydrogen peroxide has a bacterial spore-killing capability approximately 200 times greater than that of liquid hydrogen peroxide.
