• How does the tester detect pregnancy? The detector locates amniotic fluid in the uterus by ultrasonic wave reflection: the probe emits an ultrasound beam which is reflected from a fluid-filled uterine horn and returns to the probe, changing the device signal.
• When should the examination be performed? The optimal day depends on species and is calculated from mating or insemination date; repeat the test if a very early pregnancy was checked.
• What is the accuracy? In healthy animals results are nearly 100% accurate; inflammatory conditions can affect readings.
• What can interfere with results? Inflammatory changes altering uterine fluid composition (e.g., pus in pyometra) or a full bladder may give false signals.
• What signal confirms pregnancy? The tester changes the signal from intermittent to continuous when amniotic fluid is detected.
