PCT (Procalcitonin), called procalcitonin, is a test that measures the amount of procalcitonin in the blood. When you have systemic bacterial infection (sepsis), the level increases quickly and significantly. In general, in healthy people, PCT levels in the blood are very low. The PCT test helps determine the presence of a bacterial infection in the early stages, the degree of sepsis, and, in severe cases, septic shock.
