Your suggestions for improvement:
A knee prosthesis replaces a patient's damaged knee joint.
ApplicationsExternal devices are used by persons whose leg has been amputated above the knee. Implants allow those with a weakened or damaged joint due to arthritis or injury to regain nearly total mobility.
TechnologiesImplants are generally tri-compartmental, replacing the lower part of the femur, the patella and the upper tibia. Some are cemented to the bone. Others are instead coated with hydroxyapatite to encourage natural attachment to the bone.
Some external devices are mono-axial, allowing movement only along the primary axis of knee motion. Polycentric prostheses offer mobility approximating that of the natural joint.
The two fundamental factors of choice are the durability of the device and its impact on patient comfort.
