Pathological introduction
Newcastle disease is a highly contagious viral disease of birds caused by Newcastle disease virus, presenting with respiratory signs, digestive disorders, nervous symptoms and hemorrhages. It affects many avian species and causes significant morbidity and mortality in poultry, with higher susceptibility in young birds. Transmission occurs via secretions and feces; the virus can enter via respiratory, digestive tracts, conjunctiva or damaged skin. Incubation may be up to 21 days and clinical forms range from peracute with rapid death to chronic neurological presentations.

Means of detection
Laboratory confirmation includes virus isolation (embryonated egg inoculation), HA/HI, ELISA and virulence assays (ICPI, IVPI, MDT). This rapid antigen test is intended for field screening; positive or uncertain results should be confirmed by laboratory methods. For virus isolation, collect tissues (brain, lung, spleen, liver, heart, kidney, intestines) or swabs (tracheal, cloacal). Store and transport samples at 4°C if delay is expected.

Treatment options
Control measures include early culling of clinically affected birds, emergency vaccination according to veterinary protocols, and supportive care. Vaccination schedules and immunity are monitored by serology (HI). Secondary infections should be managed under veterinary guidance with appropriate antimicrobials or supportive drugs.

Additional information (FAQ highlights)
