Density determination (note)
With an optional auxiliary set the balance can be used for density determination. a) Liquids: measure buoyancy with a glass plummet of known volume immersed in the liquid. b) Solids: weigh the sample in air (A) and then in an auxiliary liquid of known density (B). Solid density (ρ) is calculated: ρ = A/(A - B) × ρ0 (ρ = sample density; A = weight in air; B = weight in auxiliary liquid; ρ0 = density of auxiliary liquid). Applications include packaged goods checks (volume from weight ÷ density), materials analysis and porous material density measurement.
