Description

Overview
The Planetary Ball Mill PM 200 is a powerful benchtop model with 2 grinding stations for grinding jars with a nominal volume of 12 ml to 125 ml. The extremely high centrifugal forces of Planetary Ball Mills result in very high pulverization energy and therefore short grinding times. The PM 200 is suitable for demanding quality control tasks across many industries and for research tasks such as mechanochemistry (mechano-synthesis, mechanical alloying and mechanocatalysis), ultrafine colloidal grinding on a nanometer scale, and routine tasks like mixing and homogenizing soft, hard, brittle or fibrous materials.

Key Features
  • Two grinding stations for jars from 12 ml up to 125 ml; 12 ml and 25 ml jars are stackable (two jars each)
  • Max. speed 650 rpm
  • Up to 10 mm feed size and 0.1 µm final fineness (colloidal/nano-scale possible)
  • GrindControl for measurement of temperature and pressure inside the jar
  • Aeriation lids to control atmosphere inside the jar for inert or reactive gas environments
  • Storable SOPs and cycle programs; 10 storable SOPs
  • Choice of 5 different jar/ball materials for dry and wet grinding
  • FFCS technology for excellent bench stability and an innovative Safety Slider for secure jar clamping preventing start-up without securely clamped jars
  • Counterweight and imbalance sensor for unsupervised operation
  • Comfortable parameter setting via display and ergonomic 1-button operation
  • Automatic grinding chamber ventilation
  • Programmable starting time and power failure backup to store remaining processing time

Performance & Operation
  • Loss-free size reduction down to the submicron range
  • Wet grinding yields particle sizes in the nanometer range (<100 nm) when using appropriate liquids/dispersants and small grinding balls
  • Variable speed from 100 to 650 rpm; speed ratio 1 : -2 (sun wheel / jars)
  • Grinding with up to 33.3 x acceleration of gravity (high G-forces)
  • Batch-wise processing with max. 2 x 50 ml sample
  • Wide range of tool materials for contamination-free grinding

Settings & Options
  • Dry and wet grinding possible
  • Suitable for long-term trials up to 99 h
  • Interval operation allowing cooling breaks
  • Direction reversal to minimize caking effects
  • Measurement of input energy possible
  • Interfaces: RS 232 / RS 485

EasyFit Grinding Jars & Accessories
The EasyFit range of jars is designed for extreme working conditions (long-term trials, high speed, wet grinding, mechanical alloying). Advanced Anti-Twist (AAT) structure on the bottom of 50-500 ml jars ensures secure fixation and reduced wear. Diameter categories allow interchangeable lids across jar sizes.
  • Diameter categories: Diameter 1 = 12 ml and 25 ml; Diameter 2 = 50 ml, 80 ml and 125 ml
  • Available jar sizes: 12 ml / 25 ml / 50 ml / 80 ml / 125 ml
  • Innovative Advanced Anti-Twist (AAT) ensures secure fit; max twist 60° to find correct clamping position
  • Pressure-tight and dust-proof O-ring sealing prevents material spillage
  • Jars and balls available in materials: hardened stainless steel, tungsten carbide, agate, sintered aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide
  • Stainless steel protective jacket available for agate, sintered aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide and tungsten carbide jars
  • A groove between jar body and lid for easier opening if underpressure occurs
  • Special closure devices and aeration lids available for colloidal/wet grinding and inert atmosphere operations

Recommended Jar Fillings (summary)
The recommended number of grinding balls (pieces) depends on jar nominal volume, sample amount and max. feed size. Table summary:
Grinding jar nominal volume | Sample amount | Max. feed size | Recommended ball charge (pieces for Ø5 mm | Ø7 mm | Ø10 mm | Ø15 mm | Ø20 mm | Ø30 mm)
12 ml | up to ≤5 ml | <1 mm | 50 | 15 | 5 | - | - | -
25 ml | up to ≤10 ml | <1 mm | 95–100 | 25–30 | 10 | - | - | -
50 ml | 5–20 ml | <3 mm | 200 | 50–70 | 20 | 7 | 3–4 | -
80 ml | 10–35 ml | <4 mm | 250–330 | 70–120 | 30–40 | 12 | 5 | -
125 ml | 15–50 ml | <4 mm | 500 | 110–180 | 50–60 | 18 | 7 | -

Functional Principle (summary)
The grinding jars are arranged eccentrically on the sun wheel. The sun wheel direction is opposite to the grinding jars with a ratio of 1 : -2. The superimposed rotational movements and resulting Coriolis forces cause a combination of frictional and impact forces that produce high dynamic energy and effective size reduction.
