The operationalsequence requires that the hard métal con-structions be processed first, followed byacrylics which are considerably softer.Orthodontie appliances are frequentlyadjusted at a later stage. It is a commonoccurrence in both cases that during workon the transition areas between acrylics andmétal, the already polished métal surfacesare roughened or damaged by inadvertentcontact with the bur. Reworking of dentalbrackets and springs tends to weaken theirstructure and leads to heat générationwhich can damage the acrylics very quickly.Worse yet, if a wire or attachment isdamaged by a bur, the entire construction isoften rendered useless and work has to berestarted from scratch.
