Alcian Blue is typically prepared at an acidic pH of 2.5 and is used to detect acidic mucopolysaccharides and acidic mucins. It is applied in histopathology to highlight mucosubstances (including increases observed in mesotheliomas) and changes in vascular walls such as in early atherosclerotic lesions.
