Testosterone is a steroid hormone produced by specific endocrine tissues (raydic cells) in the testicles of men and the ovaries of women. In men, testosterone stimulates the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as penis enlargement, body hair growth, muscle development, and degeneration. Therefore, testosterone is abundant in adolescent males, and in adult males, it helps regulate sexual function and maintain muscle mass. In women, testosterone is converted to estradiol, the woman's main sex hormone. Testosterone levels change throughout the day, peaking in the early morning between about 4 am and 8 am, and lowest in the evening between 4 and 8 pm.
