Progesterone is a diagnostic marker used to determine whether a woman's body, especially the uterine wall, is suitable for pregnancy and to keep it through delivery. Early in pregnancy, progesterone is measured along with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to diagnose ectopic pregnancy, and a decrease in levels may indicate ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. In women who are having difficulty conceiving, it is sometimes used as one of the fertility tests to see if they are ovulating normally.
