Larval Toxocariasis is a human tissue helminthosis caused by the larval stage of a dog roundworm (Toxocara canis) and a cat roundworm (Toxocara cati). Parasitic larvae hatching from the infectious eggs in the human intestine penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate via blood and lymphatic system into the liver, lungs, CNS, eyes, musculature, and other organ systems. Larvae migration causes several clinical pathologies, such as larva migrans syndrome, ocular toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis. The diagnosis is based on the evaluation of a data set: anamnesis, clinical manifestation and laboratory test results. The detection of specific IgG antibodies is a crucial diagnostic tool: given the larval incomplete life cycle and non-specific symptoms, the presence of specific antibodies against the excretory-secretory antigen (ES) is a reliable indicator of the disease in humans. Method Immunoenzymatic method for the qualitative determination of IgG-class antibodies to Toxocara in human serum, using a disposable device applied on the Chorus and Chorus TRIO instruments.The test is based on the ELISA principle (Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) which uses the reaction between the antibodies present in the tested sample and the immobilized antigen bound to solid phases.The immunoglobulins bind to the antigen through incubation with diluted human serum.The disposable devices contain all the reagents to perform the test when applied on the Chorus instruments. The result is expressed as an INDEX (ratio between the OD value of the sample and that of the Cut-off).
