Description

Overview
OptiLIGHT is an IPL medical device designed for the management of dry eye disease associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The system integrates patented Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) with clinician‑focused ergonomics and embedded treatment protocols. It is indicated as an adjunctive light‑based therapy in appropriate patients and is FDA‑cleared for management of DED due to MGD in specified indications.

Indications
Indicated for management of dry eye disease due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Regional indications:
  • EU: evaporative DED due to MGD (intended for Fitzpatrick skin types I–V).
  • US: improvement of signs of DED due to MGD in patients ≥22 years with moderate to severe signs and Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV; IPL applied to the malar region with ocular occlusion; used as adjunct to other modalities (meibomian gland expression, artificial tears, warm compresses).


Contraindications and possible side effects
Contraindications and precautions include (non‑exhaustive):
  • Ocular or eyelid surgery or neuro‑paralysis within 6 months prior to treatment.
  • Uncontrolled ocular surface disease, infections, or immunosuppressive conditions.
  • Pre‑cancerous lesions, skin cancer, or pigmented lesions in the treatment area.
  • Recent ocular infections, recent head/neck radiation, or planned radiation therapy.
  • Recent or planned chemotherapy; use of photosensitizing medications/herbs within 3 months prior to first IPL session.
  • History of herpes simplex, systemic lupus erythematosus, porphyria, migraine with photosensitivity, seizures or epilepsy (may require caution or exclusion).
Reported adverse events following IPL may include pain/discomfort, changes in skin texture or pigmentation, scarring, edema, bruising, burns, pruritus and xerosis.

Clinical evidence
Peer‑reviewed studies conducted with Lumenis IPL using OPT technology report reductions in inflammatory markers (e.g. IL‑6, IL‑17), improvements in tear breakup time and other objective and subjective measures. References are provided in the product documentation.
