Description

Overview
OPTIMA IPL is a drug-free, drop-free intense pulsed light (IPL) system developed for the treatment of periocular inflammatory conditions such as ocular rosacea and telangiectasia that can contribute to Dry Eye and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The device targets inflammatory drivers to reduce medication dependence and achieve sustained control of the inflammatory cycle.

Key benefits
  • Reduces levels of pro-inflammatory mediators to promote resolution of inflammation.
  • Targets and ablates telangiectatic vessels that perpetuate periocular inflammation.
  • Reduces Demodex mite populations associated with infection and inflammation.
  • Drug-free and drop-free design specifically configured for periocular application.

Technology and safety features
  • OPT energy delivery provides stable, spike-free output: selected energy equals delivered energy for reproducible treatments.
  • Consistent pulse energy across each pulse to improve efficacy and repeatability.
  • SapphireCool chiller tip and patented water-cooled tips for continuous contact cooling and patient comfort, enabling safe delivery of higher energy levels.
  • Small and large lightguides for access to eyelid regions and broader coverage.

Antares diagnostic integration
OPTIMA IPL is offered alongside the Antares diagnostic device for integrated dry eye and corneal assessment. Antares provides automated reports including Dry Eye report, Meibography, Tear Breakup Time, Tear Meniscus measurements and topography functionality to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

Clinical notes
OPTIMA IPL is intended to address underlying inflammatory drivers of MGD and dry eye when periocular inflammation is present. It can be incorporated into a dry eye clinical workflow as an adjunctive non-pharmacologic option. Clinical literature supports mechanisms of action and clinical outcomes related to IPL therapy in periocular disease.

Risk and warnings (non-inclusive list)
Treatment is contraindicated in patients with active skin infections, dysplastic nevi, tattoos in the treatment area, significant concurrent skin inflammation (excluding rosacea/acne), active herpes labialis near the site, open lacerations or abrasions, and recent/unprotected sun exposure. Exercise caution in patients with immunosuppression, coagulation disorders, photosensitivity, certain hormonal disorders, or a history of Herpes simplex near the treatment area. Eyes must be occluded with appropriate eye shields during treatment.

Applications
  • Periocular inflammatory conditions (e.g., ocular rosacea, telangiectasia)
  • Adjunct dry eye management in combination with diagnostic workflow (with Antares)
  • Reduction of inflammation, abnormal periocular vessels and Demodex-related pathology
