OverviewPremisut Catgut Chromic is a sterile absorbable surgical suture composed of purified connective tissue (collagen) derived from the sub-mucous layer of sheep or bovine intestine. It is available in a range of gauges and lengths and can be supplied non-needled or attached to stainless-steel needles of various types and sizes. The suture is tanned with trivalent chromium salts and coloured with oxidised pyrogallol (Colour Index number 76515) to extend resistance to absorption and produce a dark brown colour. It is packaged in conditioning fluid containing isopropanol, water, sodium benzoate and ethylene oxide.
IndicationsPremisut Catgut Chromic is indicated for soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in plastic and ophthalmic procedures. It is not indicated for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues.
Behaviour after implantationAfter implantation a moderate inflammatory tissue response occurs as part of the foreign-body reaction. Tensile strength and suture mass decrease by proteolytic enzymatic digestion of the natural catgut. Due to inherent variability of a biological material, figures for strength loss and absorption are indicative only. Effective tensile strength is usually lost between 10 and 12 days. Absorption is essentially complete by 90–100 days.
Presentation & optionsSupplied in a range of gauges and lengths; available non-needled or mounted on stainless-steel needles of various types and sizes. Packaging includes conditioning fluid for preservation.
Manufacturing / Processing detailsTanned using trivalent chromium salts and coloured with oxidised pyrogallol (Colour Index number 76515). Packaged in conditioning fluid composed of isopropanol, water, sodium benzoate and ethylene oxide.
Additional notesTechnical characteristics may vary or be adjusted to meet market or clinical requirements (for example coating, tensile strength, needle composition, packaging). Variability in absorption and strength loss is expected due to the natural origin of the material.
