PresentationThe passive avoidance paradigm is a behavioural test used to inhibit an innate or learned tendency by pairing it with an aversive stimulus. It is widely used in pharmacology and neuroscience to evaluate memory, learning processes and the effects of treatments on fear-motivated behaviour. The LE870 design follows classical one-trial learning / two-compartment protocols derived from Kurtz & Pearl (1960) and Bures & Buresova (1963).
Operating principleThe test chamber consists of two compartments of contrasting size and illumination (large white compartment and small dark compartment). The primary measured variable is latency to enter the small compartment after training; experimental parameters such as the interval between aversive stimulation and retention test can be varied to assess short- and long-term memory.
Detection systemAnimal position and zone entries are detected using high-sensitivity weight transducers with a measurement range of 10–800 g. This weight-based detection provides robust and precise zone-entry monitoring for small rodents and reduces false detections compared with photocell or grid-displacement systems.
Control and software optionsBIOSEB Passive Avoidance boxes can be controlled via the LE2708 Programmer or the SHUTAVOID software. The LE2708 Programmer is recommended for single-box setups and can be linked to a PC using SEDACOM for RS232 data transfer (connection via a single cable; first box connected to PC by RS232 or USB). SHUTAVOID is suitable for simultaneous control of multiple boxes.
