PresentationThe Bioseb Spatial Place Preference Test is an experimental chamber designed to optimise place preference and aversion studies in small laboratory animals, primarily mice. The box design was developed in collaboration with Professor Dr. Rafael Maldonado and Dr. Olga Valverde (Laboratory of Neuropharmacology, Barcelona).
Operating principleThe apparatus comprises a box with two equally sized compartments connected by a rectangular corridor. Compartments are differentiated by wall patterns (dots or stripes), shades of grey (light or dark) and floor textures (smooth or rough). An additional spatial discriminative dimension can be added to improve compartment discrimination. Transparent walls are used to minimise time spent in the corridor and to facilitate observation.

Advantages / Uses- Optimises results in place preference and aversion paradigms by reducing response variability and potentially lowering the number of animals required per group.
- Enables configuration of discriminative elements in multiple arrangements for spatial and contextual memory studies.
- Discriminative elements can serve as cues associated with drug exposure in various experimental designs.
IntegrationThe Spatial Place Preference box can be integrated with the SMART video-tracking system for automated detection and analysis of animal position throughout the test.
