The Bowie&Dick test, specifically the Bowie&Dick test pack, verifies the correct operation of a steam sterilizer. STERIM® Bowie&Dick test packs are very easy to use and immediately detect any sterilizer malfunctions. They should be used at the start of each working day with the autoclave.
The Bowie&Dick Test is a test card containing a chemical indicator placed between sheets of special paper and foam. This Bowie&Dick test pack construction simulates critical conditions and allows verification that generated steam can penetrate every crevice of the sterilized load. The Bowie&Dick test is a Type 2 indicator.
The Bowie&Dick test pack consists of:
Type 2 Bowie&Dick test sheet
Identification card for archiving purposes
Layers of foam, laminate, and special paper
Crepe paper packaging
Type 1 indicator label
Daily sterilizer performance control using the Bowie&Dick test involves placing the test pack in a preheated, empty autoclave chamber and running the Bowie-Dick program. After sterilization, remove the Bowie&Dick test pack, allow it to cool, then open it and read the result. A successful test is confirmed by a color change of the test sheet (and additionally the external label indicator) from yellow to black. The information sheet from the Bowie&Dick test should be completed with relevant data and archived.
The Bowie&Dick test should also be performed after any repair or maintenance of your steam sterilizer.
