C301B Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System is an infrared-sensor based instrument designed to determine water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of barrier materials with high and medium moisture barrier properties, in accordance with ASTM F1249 and ISO 15106-2. It is applicable to measurement of WVTR for plastic films, sheets, paper, packages and related packaging materials used in food, pharmaceutical, medical devices, consumer goods, photovoltaic and electronic industries.

Test PrincipleThe pre-conditioned specimen is clamped in the test cell; nitrogen with stable relative humidity flows on one side of the specimen while dry nitrogen flows on the other side. Due to the humidity gradient, water vapor permeates through the specimen from the high-humidity side into the low-humidity side and is carried to the infrared sensor by the dry nitrogen flow. The infrared sensor analyzes electrical signals generated by the water vapor to calculate water vapor concentration and the water vapor transmission rate.
