AFP, called alpha-fetoprotein, is a protein produced primarily in the liver of the fetus, and decreases after birth, and increases mainly in liver damage and liver cancer in adults. In addition, alpha-fetoprotein can also be observed in genital cancers such as testicular cancer and ovarian cancer. Due to these characteristics, alpha-fetoprotein is often used to check patient status after treatment or to monitor prognosis.
