Product overview
The SaberVet Itgen Toxoplasma Antibody Rapid Test is a lateral flow immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Toxoplasma antibody (TOXO Ab) in whole blood, serum or plasma. Recommended clinical indications include anorexia, lethargy, fever, dyspnea, vomiting, diarrhea and conjunctival congestion. Manufactured in China at a CE, ISO 13485 & GMP certified facility.

Toxoplasma gondii — background
Toxoplasma gondii is a single-celled parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. It is common in felines and can pose health risks to other warm-blooded animals, including humans.

Parasitic life cycle
Cats are the definitive host where parasites mature and produce oocysts that are shed into the environment. Other mammals and birds can act as intermediate hosts after ingesting contaminated food, water or infected tissues.

Incubation period and symptoms
Incubation can range from a few weeks to several months; many infected subjects are asymptomatic. In cats, signs may include fever, reduced appetite and weakness, particularly in immunocompromised animals. Human infections are often asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals but may cause severe complications in immunosuppressed patients and pregnant women.

Tests for diagnosis
  • Serological testing: detects antibodies to determine prior exposure.
  • PCR testing: detects parasite DNA/RNA for higher sensitivity and specificity.
  • Immunological rapid tests: lateral flow assays that provide quick, point-of-care results based on antigen–antibody reactions.

Prevention and treatment
Maintain environmental hygiene and promptly remove cat feces; avoid raw or undercooked meat; limit exposure to cat feces for at-risk populations. Pharmacological treatment may be required for immunocompromised patients under veterinary or medical supervision.
