Antigen backgroundCalretinin is a 29 kD calcium-binding protein of the EF-hand family, abundantly expressed in neurons and present in various non-neuronal cell types including mesothelial cells, steroid-producing cells (adrenal cortical cells, Leydig cells, ovarian theca interna cells, Sertoli cells), certain neuroendocrine cells and eccrine sweat glands.
Indications and utilityAnti-Calretinin (clone CAL6) is used as an immunohistochemical marker in diagnostic pathology. It is particularly useful as an adjunct for distinguishing malignant mesothelioma from carcinoma and for the differential diagnosis of ovarian stromal tumors. Use in combination with other markers and conventional histopathology is recommended.
