Description

Product Overview
The LEISHMANIA IgG ELISA DOG is an Enzyme Immunoassay designed for the detection of IgG antibodies to Leishmania infantum in serum and plasma samples from dogs. This assay is intended for veterinary use only and is distributed outside the U.S. and Canada.

Background
Leishmania infantum is the causative agent of leishmaniasis, a significant zoonosis occurring particularly in the tropics and sub-tropics of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and southern Europe. Dogs are the main reservoir host, and the disease can be fatal in both dogs and humans. Transmission occurs via the bite of infected sandflies, and dogs of all ages can be infected, with an incubation period ranging from months to years.

The disease may present symptomatically (with polyclonal B-cell activation, specific antibody generation, and cellular immunosuppression), subclinically (with a specific humoral immune response), or latently (with weak or absent humoral and cellular immune responses). Clinical symptoms, in decreasing frequency, include lymphadenopathy, skin reactions, cachexia, hyperthermia, conjunctivitis, splenomegaly, and abnormal claws. Laboratory findings often show slight to moderate normochromic anemia, moderate leukopenia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and hypoalbuminemia.
