The presence of CMV-specific IgG antibodies does not guarantee that you will not get the disease. A person can be infected with CMV for the first time, be reinfected by a foreign virus, or have latent viruses in the body that can become reactivated. A positive result indicates that the patient has been infected or is currently infected with CMV. If samples with CMV IgG reactivity need to rule out primary infection, CMV IgM and CMV IgG avidity should be tested. If the CMV IgM result is positive and the avidity is very low, it strongly indicates that the patient has been infected with CMV for the first time within the last four months.
