Clinical Information
Rabies virus (family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus) is an RNA virus with bullet‑shaped particles ~75 nm in diameter. Rabies causes severe progressive neurological disease in mammals; clinical signs in dogs can include aggression, hypersensitivity, salivation, difficulty swallowing and progressive neurologic decline. In humans early signs include agitation, hydrophobia, hypersalivation and respiratory difficulties, progressing to central nervous system failure if untreated.

Transmission modes
Transmission commonly occurs via traumatic contact (bites, scratches, saliva to broken skin or mucosa), occasionally via aerosols in confined spaces (e.g., bat caves), and rarely by ingestion of infected tissues.

Laboratory diagnosis methods (context)
Definitive laboratory diagnosis may use virus isolation, fluorescent antibody techniques (FAT/DFA), dRIT, ELISA or nucleic acid detection (RT‑PCR). Rapid lateral flow antigen tests provide point‑of‑care qualitative screening suitable for field or clinic triage.
