Introduction to PathologyCanine Influenza Virus (CIV) is a contagious respiratory virus affecting dogs. Main subtypes are H3N8 and H3N2. Clinical signs range from mild upper respiratory symptoms (coughing for 10–21 days, nasal discharge, sneezing, fever, reduced appetite) to severe disease such as pneumonia, particularly in puppies, elderly or immunocompromised animals.
Means of Detection- Clinical signs are non-specific; laboratory testing is required for confirmation
- PCR on nasal or throat swabs for viral RNA (high sensitivity and specificity)
- Serology to detect antibody response (requires paired acute and convalescent samples)
- Virus isolation and culture (accurate but time-consuming and requires specialized labs)
Treatment OptionsThere are no specific antiviral agents approved for CIV; treatment is mainly supportive and symptomatic.
- Antibiotics for suspected secondary bacterial infections (veterinarian prescription)
- Anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., NSAIDs) to control inflammation and discomfort
- Antipyretics for fever management
- Cough suppressants for severe coughing where indicated
- Supportive care: hydration, nutrition, isolation and rest
Preventive Measures- Vaccination where available against H3N8 and H3N2 as recommended by local guidelines
- Avoid contact with infected animals and crowded environments during outbreaks
- Hygiene and disinfection of the animal environment and equipment
