Short description The SaberVet Babesia Gibsoni Antibody Rapid Test is a lateral flow immunoassay intended for the qualitative detection of Babesia Gibsoni antibody (BG Ab) in whole blood, serum or plasma samples. It provides fast results, enabling quick diagnostic decisions.
Clinical symptoms Clinical observations in affected dogs can include depression, lethargy, anorexia, weakness of limbs, shivering, high fever (40–41 °C), progressive anemia, weight loss, pale mucous membranes, splenic sensitivity or enlargement, possible kidney enlargement and pain, dark brown urine, mild jaundice, and sometimes foul-smelling oral/nasal discharge and eye secretions.
Transmission Babesia is primarily transmitted by hard ticks. Tick vectors may transmit Babesia by egg transmission and biting. Sick dogs, carrier dogs and hard ticks are sources of infection; ticks implicated include various blood-feeding tick species.
Clinical diagnosis Diagnosis may begin with history and clinical signs including tick exposure. Laboratory tests include blood smear examination (e.g., stained peripheral blood smear) to identify parasites in erythrocytes. If parasites are not observed but disease is suspected, further diagnostic approaches or therapeutic trials may be used. Rapid testing reduces waiting time and supports quicker treatment decisions.
