Technical background
Canine babesiosis, caused by Babesia canis, is an intraerythrocytic parasite infection transmitted primarily by ticks; other routes include blood transfusion and rare transplacental transmission. Clinical signs may include haemoglobinuria, jaundice, anaemia, fever, hepatosplenomegaly and, in severe cases, respiratory or neurological signs. Diagnostic approaches include microscopic examination of stained blood smears, serology (IFAT, ELISA), and molecular assays (PCR/qPCR) for low‑parasitemia cases. Serological rapid tests detect host antibody response and are useful for screening and supporting clinical assessment.
