Clinical context and disease informationCanine distemper virus (CDV) and canine adenovirus (CAV) cause significant respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological disease in dogs. Early signs can include fever, anorexia, depression, serous ocular and nasal discharge, sneezing and diarrhoea; disease can progress to purulent discharges, coughing and neurological symptoms. CAV comprises types I and II with differing clinical presentations. Early detection supports timely clinical management and biosecurity measures.
Infection route- Direct contact with infected dogs.
- Secretions/excreta: eye secretions, nasal fluid, saliva, urine, faeces; virus may be shed in urine for extended periods (reported 60–90 days post-infection).
- Blood/organs: cerebrospinal fluid, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, spinal cord and other organs may contain high viral loads.
- Airborne: respiratory transmission via contaminated droplets.
- Fomite/contact: contaminated surfaces and instruments.
- Ingestion: contaminated feed or oral exposure leading to respiratory or digestive infection.
Note: Current evidence does not demonstrate transmission of CDV or CAV from dogs to humans.
